On January 9, the headquarters of the DPR Defense Ministry officially confirmed that the Russian armed forces took control of the village of Bakhmutskoye located on the outskirts of Soledar.
The first reports about the Russian control of the village came about a week ago. Today, the information was confirmed by local military officials. In their turn, Wagner fighters have earlier claimed that they do not claim control of a settlement immediately after the enemy leaves it but wait for several days in order to assure security in the area.
The village of Bakhmutskoe is located on the south-eastern outskirts of the town of Soledar. After the end of the mop up operation in the village, Russian fighters advanced along the road and entered Soledar.
By now, street fighting has already broken out in the central district of the city of Soledar.
On January 9, the head of the Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed that the battle for the city administration building is currently ongoing in the very center of Soledar. The building of Soledar City Council is also located next to the administration building.
Footage of street fighting in Soledar, filmed by the Ukrainian soldiers confirmed the claims. The following video was made near the houses on Karpinsky Street, close to the city administration building.

Fighting in the center of Soledar was also confirmed by the satellite imagery which showed a large fire in the area:
The Ukrainian garrison in Soledar is tactically surrounded. After Wagner fighters took control of Yakovlevka located to the north of Soledar, they advanced in the fields and blockaded the town from the north.
The defense is held by scattered detachments of the AFU formations, which are suffering heavy losses and and lack of military supplies. As a result of the lack of communication, their retreat is badly coordinated and leads to more deaths in Ukrainian ranks.
Ukrainian units have mainly retreated to the western part of the city and are attempt to defending their hideouts in multi-storey buildings and salt mines. To the north, the AFU are still holding their positions in the area of the “Artemsol” plant.
Some sources claim that the Ukrainian garrison is preparing for retreat from the town. However, the Ukrainian military command may decide to continue battle for Soledar despite the growing losses in an attempt to inflict as much damage to the advancing Russian fighters as possible.
Although the information about the complete liberation of Soledar by Russian forces does not correspond to reality yet, Ukrainian forces and their foreign comrades found themselves in a critical position.
